On a perfect late-summer day, Katherine and Dave were surrounded by their family and friends at Veritas Vineyards and Winery in Charlottesville, VA. Golden light spilled across the mountains and panoramic vineyard views, the air smelled faintly of ripening grapes, and everything about the setting felt warm, relaxed, and full of anticipation.

As their wedding photographer, I had the privilege of documenting not only their wedding day, but their rehearsal dinner the evening before, which gave me a glimpse into who they are beyond the big day. Katherine and Dave are deeply loved, endlessly fun, and clearly each other’s favorite person. They spent the evening laughing, holding hands, whispering to one another, and grinning through every toast.

Set against the vineyards and mountains just outside Charlottesville, their late-summer wedding was warm, joyful, and completely true to who they are. Between heartfelt vows overlooking the Blue Ridge Mountains, an adventurous portrait session through the vineyard, and a dance floor that kept going long after I packed up my cameras, it was a day I'll be thinking about for a long time.

Getting ready at the Bridal Suite

The morning began in two different corners of Veritas Vineyard and Winery. Katherine spent the morning getting ready with her closest friends in the beautiful Bridal Suite at Veritas, while Dave and his groomsmen relaxed together in The Study.

One of my favorite parts of every wedding day is watching the anticipation build. There's something special about those final quiet moments before everything begins, the last touch of lipstick, friends helping button a dress, a deep breath before walking out the door.

Katherine’s dress was a vision of classic elegance. Her simple satin gown felt timeless, with a silhouette that could have stepped straight out of the 1940s while still feeling modern and effortless. Dave looked just as sharp in his tailored suit, polished and confident, perfectly complementing her look.

A Wedding Ceremony at Veritas Vineyard and Winery

One of the reasons couples choose to get married at the Veritas is the incredible ceremony location with views of the cascading mountains and panoramic vineyard.

Katherine and Dave's wedding ceremony unfolded with the Blue Ridge Mountains stretching out behind them, creating a backdrop that felt both intimate and expansive. Floral endcaps lined the aisle, leading to lush white arrangements on pedestals as Katherine walked toward Dave. Their vows were heartfelt and genuine, and after the ceremony, we made a quick dash up to the mountaintop to capture portraits with the mountains and winery below.

Exploring the farmhouse at Veritas

One of my favorite parts of photographing a Veritas wedding is exploring the property beyond the ceremony space. After family photos, we turned Katherine and Dave's portraits into a little adventure. The videographer and I climbed into the bed of a truck while the couple rode up toward the upper meadows overlooking the winery. We spent the ride laughing together before wandering through the vineyard with the Blue Ridge Mountains unfolding behind us.

Rather than asking the newlyweds to hold stiff poses, I guided them with movement and simple prompts that help them focus on each other instead of the camera.

Reception and cocktail hour at Saddleback Hall

The reception was full of thoughtful, personal details. Soft lights glowed behind gauzy white curtains, and each table was named after a place the couple had traveled together. Candles and colorful florals filled the room with warmth.

Guests enjoyed cocktail hour on the deck and inside the tasting room—complete with Veritas Winery's iconic wall made from corks.

Another detail I'll never forget was their guestbook. Instead of signing a traditional book, guests picked up a vintage-style telephone and recorded heartfelt messages for the couple to listen to for years to come.

One of the most touching came during the toasts. Dave's brother couldn't attend because his wife was in labor with their first child, but he still found a way to be part of the celebration. A cardboard cutout of him stood in his place, and his recorded best man speech had everyone laughing while also reminding us that family has a funny way of showing up, even from afar.

Later in the evening

Midway through the night, Katherine surprised everyone with an outfit change into a bold red dress, and soon after, glow sticks and light-up sunglasses hit the dance floor.

When I left around 10:30 pm, the energy was still high. McDonald’s catering rolled in, a playful nod to some of Katherine and Dave’s early dates, and the celebration showed no signs of slowing down. It was a joyful, unforgettable day that felt entirely true to who they are and the life they’re building together.
