I recently had the pleasure of photographing the Steel family at Bryan Park in Richmond, and it was a session full of joy and laughter. Over the past two and a half years, I’ve had the honor of living just down the street from Lauren and Ryan, and it’s been incredible to watch baby Jesse grow from a tiny infant into a lively one-year-old.
Bryan Park is one of my favorite spots for sessions with toddlers and young children. Its expansive green spaces offer a safe, car-free environment where little ones can run freely and explore to their hearts’ content. For this session, Lauren and Ryan made a brilliant choice by bringing along Jesse’s babysitter. Her playful antics, including funny faces and bubble-blowing, had Jesse giggling and engaging with the camera like never before. In addition, she could watch Jesse for a few minutes while I took some photographs of just the couple.
I’m definitely going to be bringing bubbles to all my outdoor photoshoots with kids from now on—they add a magical touch of delight to the session (and let’s be honest, I’m a bit of a bubble enthusiast myself)!
At Bryan Park, I love parking by the soccer fields and taking advantage of the shaded disc golf area. The large swaths of shade help avoid dappled lighting and the harsh sun, making it perfect for capturing those beautiful moments with soft, even light.
