Portrait Photography at Maymont with Dara

I had the pleasure of doing portrait photography with Dara at Maymont, a stunning 100-acre Victorian estate and public park in Richmond, Virginia. This place is a photographer's dream, offering a variety of breathtaking backdrops perfect for any type of session.

About Maymont

Maymont is more than just a park; it's a historic estate with rolling hills, exquisite gardens, and charming architecture. James and Sallie Dooley's home was left to the city of Richmond in 1925. It is currently closed for remodeling but should reopen soon! Visiting the gardens is completely free, though donations are encouraged. There is no fee to have a professional photoshoot at Maymont as long as it does not impede other guest's enjoyment.

The parking lot for the grounds with the gardens is 1700 Hampton Street, the other entrances will take you to the Nature Center or Petting Farm. Their summer hours are 10:00 am to 7:00 pm.

Admission:

  • Grounds: Free (donations encouraged)

  • Mansion, Nature Center, and Special Exhibits: Suggested donation or small fee

Best Places to Photograph at Maymont

  1. Italian Garden:

  • This formal garden is perfect for elegant and romantic portraits. With its symmetrical design, beautiful fountains, and lush greenery, it's a top choice for anyone looking to add a touch of sophistication to their photos.

  1. Japanese Garden:

  • A serene and tranquil spot, the Japanese Garden features a koi pond, stone lanterns, and a picturesque waterfall. It's ideal for peaceful and reflective portraits.

  1. Maymont Mansion:

  • The exterior of this grand mansion provides a stunning backdrop with its ornate architecture and historical charm. Great for more formal or vintage-inspired portraits. Please note that professional photography inside the mansion is not allowed, although you will be able to take a tour of the refurbished manor once the remodel is finished!

  1. Arboretum and Lawns:

  • The expansive lawns and diverse collection of trees make for a versatile setting. Whether you want a wide-open space or a more intimate setting among the trees, this area offers plenty of options.

  1. Carriage House:

  • The rustic charm of the Carriage House and its surrounding area provides a unique backdrop that's perfect for more casual and relaxed portraits.

Because of the time of day we visited, we primarily stayed in the Japanese garden where there is the most shade coverage. I recommend weekday photoshoots unless you're either okay with or your photographer is skilled at removing people from the background! Personally, I remove people, signs, cars, and other distractions when possible from photos so that the photos focus on only the client.
